Tour to Mycenae, Epidaurus & Nafplion from Athens
Full-Day Private Tour to Mycenae, Epidaurus & Nafplion from Athens
Begin your full-day private tour early in the morning around 8 am with a pick-up from your hotel. Once you settle inside your air-conditioned bus, you will begin your tour to the eastern Peloponnese.
After about an hour’s drive, you will make a brief stop at the impressive and strategically important Corinth Canal for photos. This artificial canal, built in the latter 19th century, connects the Aegean Sea with the Ionian Sea on the narrow Isthmus of Corinth, preventing sailors from cruising around the Peloponnese Peninsula for more than 400 km.
You will pass towns with a colorful history and an essential presence in modern Greece as you continue the tour. You will then arrive at the archaeological site of Mycenae and follow in the footsteps of Homer as you explore the ruins of a major center of Greek civilization. Visit landmark attractions, such as the Cyclopean Walls, the Lion Gate, the Tombs of ancient kings; all these are presented to you in a complete and inspiring way by the official guide. Close to the Acropolis of Mycenae lies one of the greatest glories of this civilization: the tomb of King Agamemnon. You can have a lunch break and rest at noon.
Depart Mycenae for Nafplion, and drive through the fertile plain of Argolis. Nafplion, the first capital of Greece, is built at the foot of two Venetian castles, Palamidi and Acronafplia, and is perhaps the most enchanting town in Greece. Avail from the brief stop at Palamidi Fortress to take some photos before you continue on your way to Epidaurus.
The next destination is Epidaurus, where you will enter the culture of the fourth century BC. Epidaurus was one of the most important travel centers of antiquity with the most famous Sanctuary of the medical God Asklepios. According to mythology, Asklepios was born here, and his worship began there for the first time in the 6th century BC. Its strategic position, but mainly its Asklepieion, contributed to the city’s original development. The Asklepieion of Epidaurus became the most famous in ancient Greece due to the many severe cases of cured people. People came here from all over Greece and from the Mediterranean basin, begging for the gods’ mercy.
In 340 BC, the ancient architect Polyclitus the Younger built the theater of Epidaurus, the most beautiful and best-preserved, according to Pausanias. Designed for entertaining patients, it has a capacity of 13,000 spectators. At Epidaurus, two National Assemblies took place during the Greek Revolution. The first one took place in 1821 when proclaimed the independence of the Greek nation, and the second in 1826. There are excellent theatrical performances during summer, most of which refer to ancient tragedies or comedies. Visitors during July and August should not lose this experience. You can check for programs and tickets at the site of the Greek Festival.
After a fascinating trip to Argolis, your full-day tour ends back at the original departure point in Athens at around 5 pm.
Tip: Try to wear comfortable shoes.
